The Eden Valley is remarkably little known, but is visited time and again
by those who have discovered it. The River Eden has its source in the Mallerstang
Valley, and flows through the old market towns of Kirkby Stephen and Appleby.
Lovely villages are dotted around Ullswater and throughout the Eden Valley
giving a wonderful choice of places to stay. The surrounding countryside
is perfect for walking and cycling, six long distance walks / cycleways
pass through the town. The River Eden provides challenging fishing, and
has in place a "Go Wild" scheme to enable visitors to try wild fishing on
the river. Information about this scheme is on the Go
Wild website.
The market town of Penrith, is the major town in the Eden Valley, with
a good mix of traditional shops selling locally made products and crafts,
It is an ideal place to start exploring the whole area. There's also Appleby
on the banks of the River Eden, Kirkby Stephen at the foot of the wild Mallerstang
Valley and Alston high up in the Pennines.

Where to Stay - hotel, bed and breakfast, self catering, caravan and
camping
Maybe it's the warm lakeland welcome, or perhaps
the curiously eclectic mix of ancient, Cumbrian and contemporary.
It probably has a lot to do with the food (and the beer).
Walk into the warmth of the Tufton
Arms Hotel, a renowned coaching house in the centre of the medieval
market town of Appleby-in-Westmorland, and savour the experience.
