Traveling By Road

There are many road network connecting Cumbria and the Lake District from the south and north of the county with the M6 motorway being the main link with connections onto the A66 taking you into Northern Lake District and onto to the coast. The A590 leads to the Southern Lake District and around the coast. There is the AA Travel and Route Planner website that will help you to plan your visit to the lake district.

Visiting By Coach

There are a number of Coaches and Express Buses, which travel to Cumbria from various links around the country.

There are many bus links linking the Lake District and Cumbria from the stations, along with Taxi Services.

Traveling By Rail

The Lake District and Cumbria can be reach by Rail from London, Birmingham, Manchester and Glasgow. There is a station at Oxenholme, near Kendal. A further 20 minutes will take you to Windermere station. Penrith and Carlisle stations can also be reached via the country's railway network. The journey from London would normally take around 3 hours.

You can also arrive from the Yorkshire Dales and Eden Valley via The Settle to Carlisle Railway. A link from Newcastle via The Tyne Valley Line, into Carlisle is also available.

By Plane The closet airport to the Lake District and Cumbria is Manchester which has its own Rail Station, with links to Windermere, Carlisle, Penrith and Barrow-in-Furness. Othe major airports include Glasgow, Newcastle and Leeds/Bradford. Airport Transfers can also be arranged to the Lake District, and car hire is available at the airports.
