The Eden Valley is remarkably little known, but is visited time and again by those who have discovered it. The River Eden has its source in the Mallerstang Valley, and flows through the old market towns of Kirkby Stephen and Appleby. Lovely villages are dotted around Ullswater and throughout the Eden Valley giving a wonderful choice of places to stay. The surrounding countryside is perfect for walking and cycling, six long distance walks / cycleways pass through the town. The River Eden provides challenging fishing, and has in place a "Go Wild" scheme to enable visitors to try wild fishing on the river. Information about this scheme is on the Go Wild website.
The market town of Penrith, is the major town in the Eden Valley, with a good mix of traditional shops selling locally made products and crafts, It is an ideal place to start exploring the whole area. There's also Appleby on the banks of the River Eden, Kirkby Stephen at the foot of the wild Mallerstang Valley and Alston high up in the Pennines.
